Welcome to Olde Uptown!
Located directly behind the Governor's Mansion, Olde Uptown claims the northern-most tip of the City's Historic District and is currently experiencing the most aggressive and transforming redevelopments in all of Harrisburg. In fact, nearly 1/3 of the homes in the neighborhood (90+ out of 300 homes in all) have been or will be renovated within the next 18 to 24 months. Most homes in the neighborhood were built in the late 1800's and resemble Romanesque, Queen Anne, and Italianate-era architecture. After strong floods in 1972, many homes in this neighborhood were abandoned. Years of neglect caused the condemnation of many of the homes. In 2005, real estate development partners, Green Street Properties and WCI Partners, as well as a handful of private real estate investors, targeted Olde Uptown and began to aggressively acquire condemned and blighted homes as well as vacant lots. Rehabs to existing houses range from entire rebuilds to smaller restoration jobs. In all cases, as much of the historic integrity of the homes is preserved. In the middle of Olde Uptown, the partner developers, with the help of state grant money, are adding approximately 25 brand new town homes that complement the historic style of the neighborhood but feature modern conveniences such as garages and 2nd floor decks.
